Newstead Woods School vs Dartford Grammar for Girls
Please can I have feedback from as many of you as possible and PettswoodFiona. I have a real dilemma deciding between NWS and DGSG for first choice.
We live close to DGSG, it seems to have done reasonably well this year in Progress score............but NWS has long academic tradition and my heart is nagging me to pick NWS, DD quite likes NWS. I am also worried about whether the 9 mile distance will pose a serious issue with DD forming friends. Can you please advise me regarding as many of below points and what you think I should do?
- is anyone living in Dartford sending a child to Orpington........is there an issue with making friends due to distance? and any "tiredness" issues interfering with homework?
- most/all NWS clubs seem to be during lunchtime.........how do kids find the time to socialise and make friends or is this not an issue? do all the kids end up attending lunchtime clubs anyway?
- which is more important, attainment score or progress score?
- is anyone aware of any significant long-term educational changes made recently by DGSG which might explain the better score this year?
- is DGSG proactive with encouraging and entering kids for regular competitions like NWS
I feel truly stuck, time to make choices running out, please help! THANK YOU!

You say your DD likes NW but not love it. What does she think about Dartford? If I were in your position and my DD likes Dartford I would probably pick Dartford. That is coming from someone who knows how good NW is. However Dartford is a good school too.
Only you will know which is best for your DD. We let DD put the schools in her preference order and not ours - it has meant she has been invested in making it work too.
On half days at end of term the girls often go into Orpington and go to Creams or similar for socialising. They don’t do clubs every lunchtime and they also have form time and break time to chat a bit too. The walk to and from the school to train or bus stops at Orpington station is also another opportunity to talk.
