Many thanks for your reply perplexed. It really does seem complicated and i appreciate your comments. My son scored highly on the VR/NVR -138/136 so i realise Maths may be the one we have to work on. I guess its just knowing 'how far' away from this we are. I will take your advice, be brave, and ask the school...particularly as we are only 4 months away!
Thanks again TM

TonbridgeMum and everyone else
I have read all the posts. Thanks for everybody's comments. I too am in the Tonbridge area so will be looking for a Tonbridge Grammar. What percentage are actually likely to get there as opposed to Weald of Kent (which never used to be called a grammar when I went to TGGS - but that was in the 1970ies!!!).
I am also on the boundary of Maidstone so perhaps should be looking there as well? Does anybody have idea of what level would be needed in Maidstone as opposed to Tonbridge.?

If you are going to try for Skinners or Judd, get hold of the NFER practice papers, and some Bond assessment papers. In the next few months work on speed, accuracy, and the topics that your son needs to improve on or cover from scratch. The NFER practice papers ( 3 for maths) will show you all the different kinds of questions that could turn up. To score 140 (top score) in the maths 11+ paper in Kent your son needs probably to be getting at least 75% correct in the REAL paper on the day. The NFER practice papers that you can buy in a book shop or on this site are just intended to show you all the topics you need to cover and give practice in the sorts of question that could crop up. You cannot work out what your score would be in the real papers from a score on the practice paper.
To get into Skinners or Judd you need to be getting nearly 140 in all three Kent papers. The maths paper may require you to go further than the content your son will have done at school so far.
The NVR / VR scores respond to practice too, but do not depend so much on syllabus content covered as the maths paper (in my personal view).
Good luck.

Jane Dingdong, if you look back through this Kent section you should find some references to the cut-off score this year for Tonbridge Girls Grammar.
Some girls will get in on appeal with lower scores than this. The school should let you know what the cut-off score was for the last few years. Then when you get your daughter's actual 11+ score you can decide whether it is worth putting TGS on the CAF or not.
You will still be guessing slightly as the cut-off score does vary from year to year. It might potentially go up this year as people know their score before applying so the proportion of top scorers who apply could be higher than in past years.
Good luck

I'm not sure if I quite understand what you are asking but I can tell you that the cut off score for TGS in area girls this year was 405 when places were initially allocated in March. A further 14 places were offered from the waiting list bringing the score down to 401.Janedingdong wrote:TonbridgeMum and everyone else

Weald just need an 11+ pass (ie 120 on 2 papers and 115 on the third)as they have different oversubscription criteria, one of the main ones being distance from home to school. I don't know how far out you are but if you are unsure as to likelihood of gaining a place on distance I would suggest phoning the school.
MGGS and Invicta do not need exceptionally high scores, again just a pass, as their oversubscription criteria are similar to Weald. Would be worth looking at Maidstone schools as an option - my DD didn't get high enough score for TGS initially but was offered a place at MGGS.
Hope this is the kind of information you wanted.

Also meant to say that presumably as results will be given before school choices need to be made, then more children might take the test anyway because it looks to me as if, apart perhaps from putting unnecessary pressure on your child, you have absolutely nothing to lose by putting your child forward?
What do others think?

Yes, i agree and getting it 'out the way' so early in the school year I suppose takes the pressure off some what. Having said that, it will be interesting to see see what they do for the rest of year 6!
My son hasnt yet picked up on my stress so i am hoping we can get through the next few weeks and the summer without too much worry.
Its very difficult to know how much work to do at home without piling on the pressure.
