Lulu Queen - out of interest can you please explain how long it took you to work that one out? Goodness knows how my dd is expected to work it out.

Will have to give it a try though...thanks.

Er...after reading the question through a few times I just thought of all the strategies I could use and this seemed to be the best one - algebra never fails!

Can't really say anything more...
Glad to help anyway,

By the way...that question was on a previous 11+ exam paper - CSSE and my dd has just turned 10!

I got as far as this and gave up. I still have to really sit and read LuluQueen's answer when my brains are working properly. It seems really tricky for an 11year old.

Hm...
I think that is the sort of question that's supposed to separate the good and the really good in the 11+?
If I were the school, I would definitely set that question to see how certain children cope with it and such.

hmmm it is hard for a 10/11 year old. I just always start these questions with an estimate which isnt very exact i know. But it often works.

I gave Maria £2.00
which ment david had £3.50
and Zainab £8.50

This added up to £14.00
90p too much.
90p divided by the 3 people is 30p
so i took 30p away from each amount.
Giving Maria £1.70

Still quite trick that way too. I tried it that way myself and sadly couldnt still work it out. Is this an algebra question?
