Yes Belinda, it would be quite a good question if you had to come up with a formula, but still a little strange in many respects. I am relieved that the author of the question considered it wise to take 6 months to reduce weight to 130 ounces rather than expect overnight results.

before = 130 - (0.2 x gain), but only if she gained less than 650.

:D This is a genuine question from a mock exam-the ones run by 11+mocktests- they can be found on the internet. We sat a boys paper at Wally Girls in August. They send you your child's answer paper once they have marked it and given you the results, and you can find the question paper online. My husband and I also came to the conclusion that there was not enough information here to answer the question, and he is a maths whizz! My eldest is at Wallington Boys - it's a great school, these questions are nothing to do with them, they just hire out the school during the holidays!

So they give you the question paper, and the marked script, what about a model answer for each of the questions your child couldn't do? And was it really in ounces?
