Logic question - please help

Post by Supermom »

Hi all,

I was wondering if some-one could help with the question below:

Michael is 8 years old now. His dad is 29. How old will Michael be when his dad is twice his age? (copied word for word from a question paper)

Many thanks

His dad is 29-8=21 years older than him. So when he is 21, his dad will be 42.

Difference in age 29-8=21
Dad twice as old will be 29+29=58
58-21=37
Michael will be 37

Both could be right depending on how it is read. Badly written question.
They should put "At some point in the future, for one year Michael's Dad will be twice as old as Michael. How old will Michael be then?" (or something)
Or "When Michael's Dad is twice as old as he is now, how old will Michael be?"

The tutor we used says that there are always some unanswerables because the settors do not check well enough.
In some of the "odd 2 out" word questions you can get different correctly odd 2 outs if you apply a different interpretation, but the computer will mark you wrong. We found at least 3 of the stand alones that had one vital piece of information missing, meaning you could not use logic for the answer. There were also a couple of those numbers in brackets that her maths professor husband could not work out.

If this were a multiple choice question you would hope the answer sheet may help!
But I agree these badly worded questions are a pain.
