Rhys and Ricky's age add upto 10. In 10 years time , Rhys will be one and a half times as old as Ricky. How old is Ricky now?

Many Thanks,

In 10 years time their ages will add up to 30 (10 +10 +10), Rhys age will be 3/5 of 30, Ricky 2/5 of 30, which makes Ricky 12 in 10 years, therefore he his 2 now.

I think that works?

Why will their ages add up to 30 in ten years' time and not 20, if they add up to ten now? Sorry- I am awful at the logic at Maths.

Because they are adding ten years each to the total

The equations are:

Rh + Ri = 10
Rh + 10 = (Ri +10) * 3 / 2

Rh + 10 = (20 - Rh) * 3 / 2
Rh + 10 = 30 - 3Rh / 2
5Rh / 2 = 20
Rh = 40 / 5 = 8

Algebra really doesn't help with these questions - the first method posted is easier to understand.
