Maths and English GCSE standards

At what stage would the decision to go for both or just GCSE 1 be taken?
Would a high scorer that was down just to do GCSE 1 be able to then take
GCSE 2? This was the problem with GCE/CSE... if a teacher decided that the student would only be able to take CSE then that was it as they were different curriculums.
My English teacher (definite clash of personalities.... something to do with my statement that I thought 'Shakespeare was evry overated) was adamant that I was not able enough to take GCE English Lit. I changed classes (and teacher).... got an 'A' at GCE and went on to do A level.
If she had got her way I would have just sat for CSE.. with no chance of doing A level.
Could this happen again with the two tier system?

Chad I think you may have misinterpreted my use of the word 'two tier'.
GCSE 1 is examined in two tiers - Higher [A* to D] and Foundation [C to G]
I suspect that the decision about whether to go for GCSE2 will be taken in Y9 at Options time - although some schools may decide to do GCSE 1 in year 10. 2012 is a long way off and until a final specification is published [2010] I can't really anticipate.
We still don't know what the abolition of Maths coursework will mean for current Y9s - frankly for Maths teachers that is more of a headache at the moment!
