1+ 3 + 5 = 9

36/9 = 4

A = 1x 4=4
B= 3x4= 12
C= 5X4=20

As worked out by Twinkle

I would also explain that the ratio 1:3:5 means for every article that A has, B has 3 times as many (as A) and C has 5 times as many (as) A.
Adding up all the quantities you've worked out gives you the total number of articles you had to share out (use this to check your answer)

I teach ratio as beads in a pattern on a bracelet.

36 beads on the whole bracelet.
Bracelet made up of beads in the pattern:
A B B B C C C C C

How many beads in the pattern and how many patterns in the bracelet.
