Percentages topic in Eleven plus exams

Post by mum-of-three »

Hi Everybody
My son is in year 5 and I am doing DIY preparation with him for the Eleven Plus tests. One of the problems that I am facing is related to Percentages topic in Maths. There is such a huge variation of questions under the same topic that my DS seems to be struggling a bit. I would like to be sure if I am not overdoing the things with him which consequently can make him more confused in the long run.

Please can some one tell me which questions out of the following list need to be covered for KS2 only and which ones are the higher level questions. I have put in examples of each type in order to make things more clearer.

1. Percentage to Amount
a. Basic % to amount (What is 25% of 250)
b. Increasing an amount by %age (What will be 250 increased by 20%)
c. Decreasing an amount by %age (What will be 250 decreased by 20%)
c. Profit in percentages (Purchase price=50, sale=60, what is profit %age)
d. Loss in percentages (Purchase price=60, sale=50, what is loss %age)
d. Reverse of %age (if 22% of an amount is 15, what is original amount)

2. Amount to Percentage
a. Basic amount to percentage (What percentage is 25 of 30)
b. % increase (An amount of 50 is increased by 10, what is %age increase)
c. % decrease (An amount of 50 is decreased by 10, what is %age decrease)

3. Finding original amount
a. Find original amount (If 15% VAT added price is 25, what is original price)
b. ----- do ---------- (If profit 20%, sale price=60, what is purchase price)
c. ------do ---------- (If loss 20%, sale price=60, what is purchase price)

Looking forward to some answer from some one experienced with DIY prep in maths.

Thanx in advance

I have 2 11 plus maths books...the Bond one and a Letts one, which sets out all those types really clearly. I also bought a maths book called " Practice and Pass " which has those question types plus it goes over how to do them the other way round. ( if you know what I mean...not very mathematically minded here! )

Can you please suggest me the names of these books that you have mentioned?
Also do you mean to say that all these types are included in 11+ maths tests?

Thanks
