arrh ok i think am the one getting confused here.

my thoughts was that since it costs £80 in pounds then from the conversion rate it would automatically cost X2 in New zealand since

£1 = 2 NZ
but am getting it wrong?

On the third row down we know that the first two have to add to get 54 - assuming this is an addition pyramid?

you could use algebra and say a + b = 54 or use trial and improvement ie guess a pair

On the bottom row the second number must be a - 12 [it's got to add with a to get 12]

So a - 12 + 8 = b

If I was using trial and improvement then I'd guess

27 and 27 so the first gap on the bottom row would be 15 but 15 + 8 = 23 which is four less than we want so adjust.

28 and 26 so the first gap on the bottom row would be 16 but 16 + 8 = 24 which is two less than we want so adjust

29 and 25 so the first gap on the bottom row would be 17 ... 17 + 8 = 25 it works

Thanks Guess55. I was wondering if it was a trial and error solution or if there was a something obvious I was missing. I started using algebra too but saw it was quite involved given that the paper is only an hour long!
