Perse paper 4

Post by UmSusu »

Please help.

Qu.16:
6764 / 76 = 76

Use this result to write down answers to the following:
A) 6764 / 76. (89 - I can see that)
B) 7.6 / 0.89 I can't work out how that could be anything other than 8.539... But I don't see how I would be using the info they gave to work this out.

Am I missing something obvious?

6764/76 isn't 76.

The actual question says: given 6764 / 89 = 76, write down
(a) 6764 / 76
(b) 7.6 * 0.89

We know 76 * 89 = 6764, so we then manipulate the decimal fractions.

Sorry daveg, I mis-typed : I should have checked  it was in fact as WP points out:
6764/89 = 76

Thank you WP, but my paper says 7.6 / 0.89 for the second part, not multiply. Do you think it is a typo on the paper then?

Thanks,

No you don't need to multiply as the numbers will remain the same only the decimal point moves. In part (b) the question has 3 numbers after the DP ( .6 and .89) so the answer should have 3 numbers after the DP as well. It will therefore be 6.764

I am sorry, I feel really dumb now: I still don't get it
When I do the sum on the calculator it comes to 8.5 something. My son put the same answer as you mention and I can only assume that they want you to play with the numbers to use one of them as the answer but 'the calculator says no'

The only sensible explanation if the original calculation is meant to help you is that it is a typo and the "divide" should be "multiply":

7.6*0.89 = 6.764.

7.6/0.89 = 8.539(and a lot more digits!)

Thank you Toadmum :D

Once WP mentioned the multiplication option it made more sense, but I was worried I was still missing something glaringly obvious - DS didn't bother with that small detail of a typo and just put the number he assumed they were expecting: he said he was not going to waste his time

I am assuming then that everyone who sat the exam that year would have sat it with the misprint?

Thanks again

6764 ÷ 89 = 76
Use this result to write down the answers to each of the following:

(a) 6764 ÷ 76
Answer: (a):

(b) 7.6 × 0.89
Answer: (b):

_____________

The above is copied from the paper I have. If the question is 7.6 / 0.89 then the answer cannot be arrived at using the above numbers because the number facts for that calculation are not given.

Maybe the X sign was not printed fully on your copy.

Thanks leanmeanmum, definitely a division sign on my copy but I printed it off some time ago when I was preparing DS1 - maybe they corrected since?

At least I can put that to rest - DS has left me to it now and says he is not coming back to review it anyway
