*816 - 28 = 788 --> We take away the number of girls
*788/2 = 394 --> We have to split the number in half in order to work out the number of boys and girls
*There are 394 boys and at least 394 girls
*394 + 28 = 422 --> We have to add the 28 girls back to find the total number of girls in the school

My dd does this kind of q differently. She halves the number to find out what it would have been if they were equal. Then she halves the difference given in the question and adds this or takes it away from the midpoint depending on what the question is asking. You could draw this out too for your child if it helps. There are a lot of question on the same theme in schofield and sims, bond assessment papers etc.
