DECIMALS PERCENTAGES AND FRACTION, PLEASE HELP US??
MY DAUGHTER AND I ARE WORKING THROUGH BOND 10 MIN TESTS I AM STUCK.
Can anyone help me with the following questions??
WHAT FRACTION OF 2 HOURS IS 15 MINUTES?
1/4, 1/2, 2/15, 1/8,1/3
HOW DID THEY GET 1/8
I UNDERSTAND 2 HOURS =120 MINS
SO FRACTION NOW BEING 15/120
SO I NEED TO CANCEL DOWN?? BY WHAT??
THIS QUESTION IS DOING MY HEAD IN
JANE SCORCES 17 OUT OF 25 IN A MATHS TEST.
WHAY PERCENTAGE DID SHE GET??
ANSWER IS 68%
HOW DID THEY GET THIS??
ANOTHER ONE
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING HAS THE LARGEST VALUE?
5/7, 71%, 0.69, 2/3, 65%
WHICH METHOD SHOULD I APPLY TO MAKE MY DAUGHTER UNDERSTAND.
CHANGE ALL TO DECIMALS??
PLEASE HELP ME AS WERE BOTH VERY CONFUSED.

4 lots of 15mins in 1 hrHARP wrote: WHAT FRACTION OF 2 HOURS IS 15 MINUTES?

HOW DID THEY GET 1/8
therefore 8 lots of 15 mins in 2hrs
i.e. 1/8
Test is out of 25. But Percentage means out of 100.HARP wrote: JANE SCORCES 17 OUT OF 25 IN A MATHS TEST.
WHAY PERCENTAGE DID SHE GET??
ANSWER IS 68%
25 x 4 = 100
So... 17 x 4 = 68
Well 2/3 is 1/3 doubled... i know this is 0.66666HARP wrote: WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING HAS THE LARGEST VALUE?
5/7, 71%, 0.69, 2/3, 65%
65% is 0.65
0.69 is 0.69
71% is 0.71
so we've got 0.71 as the max so far
Now... 5/7 looks tricky...
long division.. 0.71+a bit
So... 5/7
Only my attempts and i'm not a tutor just a parent

I think you are overcomplicating the fraction of hours one. She'll know 15 mins is 1/4 of hour, so it will be 1/8 of double the time, that is two hours.
The comparison of amounts. Change them all into decimals. Get her to memorise 1/3 = 0.33 so 2/3 - 0.666666. The only one left to worry about is 5/7. That means 5 divided by 7 which is 0.716.... so that is the biggest.
Personally I like the 10 minute tests because it is a good way of giving them a daily dose of maths without being excessive. However, I think some of the questions are harder than you are going to encounter--this being one of them. None of my pupils or my daughter could manages this one. I am lucky because, when I see none of them managing them, I know it's not important that she can't.

If she is having difficulty converting fractions to decimals and vice versa, try googling fractions and decimals and games. There are lots of good games to help her understand. I think bbc has some.
I'll nip off around teh web and see if anything else pops up....
first question ...I did it by 15 mins is a 1/4 of an hour
2 hours is twice 1 hour
15 mins is 1/8 of 2 hours
