If the cost of the Book is B, cost of Comic is B - 20

Cost of 4 books = 4B
So cost 7 comics is 7B -140
Total cost = 223 (Given)

Based on the above it works out that B = 33p and Comic = 13p

Hope that helps

You do NOT need to use algebra for this type of problem.

Each Book cost 20p More than a comic

Hence, The cost of 4 books will be 80p more that the cost of 4 comics

So

7 comics and 4 books cost 223 pence which is also the same as

7 comics and 4 comics + 80p = 223 pence

11 comics + 80p = 223 pence

11 comics = 143p

1 comic = 13p
