I don't personally believe that it is wrong to give full answers to members' queries
I agree with equilibro. I think some people will be put off asking questions if they have to work questions out step by step. I think giving the full answer and explanation is more useful (including for others who have the same problem) and a parent can then explain it to a child and if they don't understand it they can ask for more explanation.

I haven't seen anyone say they are 'put off' and I've been on here a long time ...

Giving a full solution is not helpful as usually there are alternative ways of approaching a problem. If a parent is DIYing then they need to 'decode' questions as well ... giving an answer doesn't help that at all.

Lots of the questions asked on here are already answered somewhere and people need to use the search facility first.

I hear what you're saying Guest. I find that when DD is stuck on a maths question, I never ever jump in and give her the answer, even tho that is the easy way forward for both of us!! I ask her to read, look and think about it so she can start 'thinking', for herself. If after a while she still thinking, I give her hints, and ask her questions to help her along until she nails it. She feels more satisfied ( as well as me!!), when she has eventually worked out a question herself and also confidence starts to kick in, which is half the battle when exploring new land to tread in maths. There is however the odd and isolated occasion tho when after all the explaining and her thinking that I have to show her step by step how to do the question ( that's when she really does not get it at all). Then I ask Her to solve it after my explanation, but that is very rare when I do that.

I think you are correct - get her to tell you how many kg 2000g is ...

Sometimes children don't look at the units ....

I think she has done (30+20)*2 and (30+20)*3.5 rather than:
(30*2)+20 and (30*3.5)+20

Get her to re-read the question don't just give her russet's solution.

She needs to understand that she must work out the time for the amount of meat there is and then add on the 20 mins. Try a third example to make sure she has understood.
