Does anyone know if Roman Numerals tend to crop up in Indy, GL or CEM exams? We've not learnt them and I'm wondering if we need to. Thanks

well, they are now included in KS2 syllabus ( y4 & 5 iirc?) so may crop up

Thanks. I guess at most they'd have to state the value of a Roman numeral, or vice versa. Surely not do entire sums in them.

There is no 'proper' place value so Roman numerals would need to be changed before calculation could be performed.

The statutory requirement (in the National Curriculum) is that pupils should be taught to: "read Roman numerals to 100 (I to C) and know that over time, the numeral system changed to include the concept of zero and place value" (my emphasis) as part of the Year 4 programme of study and to "read Roman numerals to 1000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals" as part of the Year 5 programme of study. So it seems that they won't be asked to convert a 'regular' number into a Roman numeral, or perform any mathematical operations on Roman numerals.

Sure. But I'd have thought that 'reading' means converting from Roman numerals to 'regular' numbers. I was pointing out that there doesn't seem to be any requirement to do the reverse.

Recognising years in Roman numerals would mean converting e.g. MMX to 2010

I think it's highly unlikely any calculation will be asked for.

Ridiculous bit of the curriculum to have to learn in maths. Teaching it in history in my school. Fun to make children calculate with them though as it really reinforces the power of zero!

Totally agree - also the usefulness of place value!

If you are going to teach Roman Numerals then lets look at Egyptian numerals as well or any other way of recording numbers.
