Re: The London Independent School Consortium- Maths Specimen
That would be the way to work it out (assuming the arithmetic is correct!) if the shape was a hollow box like a rubics cube.Joseph wrote:The sides of the the shape are 6 by 5 by 10
She took away two from each number and got 4 by 3 by 8
6 by 5 by 10 is 300
4 by 3 by 8 is 96
300-96 is 304
Sorry her answer was 304
It's not a hollow box though, because it has no faces, only edges and corners.
The way I would do it is just add up the 12 edge sections plus the 8 shared corner cubes (remembering not to include the corners in the edge lengths).
I won't post what I think the answer is so your daughter can try and work it out for herself.
Re: The London Independent School Consortium- Maths Specimen
I didn't do it like that - the front face (nearest us) and back face are like (a) so I added two of those. Then, to get the total I added the four sides (like sticks) not included.Proud_Dad wrote:

There's always more than one approach

I have to admit I was only looking at part (e) in isolation and hadn't bothered to look back at the other parts of the question.Guest55 wrote:I didn't do it like that - the front face (nearest us) and back face are like (a) so I added two of those. If you've already worked out part (a) though, I agree that the way you said looks simplest.
