This school has come out of the consortium and out this sample paper up in the website.

Looking quickly through it I'm struggling with Questions:

12b.... are there some numbers missing? and

47... should top left be b+1/2*a rather than b-1/2*a?

12b - yes - we need some lengths to find a perimeter!

44 - can you clarify what you think the issue is?

Thanks Guest55. I thought I was going mad.

On 44, the first attempt of 9044 gives error message 'no digits correct'. It doesn't state that the error message refers to the digits being placed in the correct order. As the answer is 4490, actually all of the digits are correct, just in the wrong order.

I know they will probably work it out but they could have clarified it better.

44 - I interpreted it as the digit had to be in the correct position and agree with your answer.

It can't have been checked very carefullly ...

One more question: number 48... Either because I've lost confidence in this school to set their questions clearly and correctly.. Or it is late in the evening.

I thought it was a trick question... Number of each shape represented by the number or sides or number of vertices. But it's not working....

If you think it's a do-able question then I will have another look tomorrow.

As the question doesn't say that the number of side/vertices is relevant at all, I just treated each shape as an 'unknown' (i.e. plain algebra) and used substitution between the formulae to reach an answer for the value of the triangle. I won't post it here as you've said, "If you think it's a do-able question then I will have another look tomorrow." I think an answer is reachable, but I not sure if it's the answer they're looking for, as it's a little odd.

Yes it is doable. As Goodheart said, you have to treat each shape as an unknown number.
For a hint, try doubling the first line.

Having looked at the rest of the paper, I too had assumed it was unsolvable on first glance, but the answer is the only one it could be in such a question where there are no actual numbers given. Otherwise there would be an infinity of solutions.

However I do think any remotely mathematical 10 year old would have likewise lost confidence at this point.
