Tom and Jerry question from past paper.

Post by 2tinkers »

Hello all. Struggling with a suitable method for this question.
Please help as I am getting myself in a tizz.
Q. In the same time Tom can run 100 metres Jerry can only run 60.
Tom and Jerry have a competition.
When Jerry has run 100metres Tom sets off in pursuit.
How many metres will Tom have run before he catches Jerry?
We started this thinking about ratio but can't get beyond that!!!
Thank you in advance.

When Tom starts running they are like this:
Jerry: 100m
Tom: 0m

After a certain time t:
Jerry: 160m
Tom 100m

And again after 2t
Jerry: 220m
Tom: 200m

If we take another time period 3t:
Jerry: 280m
Tom: 300m ... he's in front

So take 2.5t
Jerry: 220 + 30 = 250m
Tom: 200 + 50 = 250m
