Maths non-multiple choice questions

Hi All
I’m hoping you may be able to give me some advice. My son struggles for the timing in the maths sections that do not have multiple choice answers. Obviously when answering the multiple choice questions when running out of time, the child can just mark any box in the hope of getting some right as this is better than not answering (but not ideal). However how would you tackle the maths questions where they have to enter numbers in the boxes provided and mark the corresponding boxes when they only have a minute left and some questions still unanswered? I’m at a loss what to advise him.
