A map has scale of 1:40000 What real distance on the map represents 19km?

19000 metres /40000 = 0.475 metres = 47.5 cm

I would do it as :
1 : 40000
so 1cm = 40,000cm
so 1cm = 400m
so 1 cm = 0.4km
so to make the numbers easy, 2.5cm = 1km.
You have to times both sides by the same amount, so to get to 19km on the right side you have to multiply it by 19, meaning you have to multiply the left hand side by 19 too. 2.5 x 19 = 38 + 9.5 = 47.5cm
