-7+(-3)-(-5)
= -7-3+5 because +(-3)=-3 And -(-5)=+5
= -10+5
= -5
Hope it helps

try using a number line (a ruler is useful) to help you visualise the problem..

Hi
-12 -11 -10 -9 -8 -7 -6 -5 -4
-7 is the starting value
+ (- 3) ultimately a student should know that a + - = -
-3 takes you to -10
- (-5) ultimately a student should know that - - = +
+ 5 takes you to -5
-12 -11 -10 -9 -8 -7 -6 -5 -4
The + and - sign indicate the direction in which you travel along the number line.
+ goes right and - goes left.
When two signs are together the following applies;
The + sign indicates no change of direction and a - sign indicates a change of direction.
-7 is the starting point
+ (-3)
indicates that you are going to move right (+) but followed by (-) means you have to change direction, go left 3 places to -10.
- (-5)
indicates that you are going to move left (-) but followed by (-) means you have to change direction, go right five places to -5
With the + + combination
indicates you are going to move right (+) followed by (+) means you will continue moving right.
With the - + combination
indicates you are going to move left (-) followed by (+) means you will continue moving left.
With triple combinations e.g - - -
Indicates you are going to move left (-) followed by (-) means you will have to change direction to the right, followed by (-) means you have to change direction to move left.
Regards
Mike
