Does anyone have any suggestions for learning this skill? My 10 year old is good at maths but has a mental block about this ... :? :?

Practical work - use mirrors on the edge of a pattern.

It's not perfect because it does not allow a shape that 'straddles' the mirror.

Copy patterns etc

For rotational symmetry - again do lots of examples -
