How do they decide if the review was fair? My understanding of the review system is that it is intended to scoop in the children who missed out on the test for whatever reason but were expected by their schools to pass, in other words their result does not reflect their abililty. If the childs school says that yr child 100% falls into this category and is of grammar ability then as a parent you can only go with what they recommend and when a review panel then tells you that yr child is not suited to grammar of course you feel that this is unfair! Whose opinion is right, the school who knows the child and assesses them regularly or a panel who do not know the child and only have a few pieces of work to go on? How much weight does the school carry on appeal? Does anyone know of anyone who got through on appeal last year after an unsuccessful review?

Honey I have sent you a PM. At the bottom of this page you should see new message link.

As I stated you first need to find out if they will uphold the the review was fair...

Thanks for all your help everyone. I'll be contacting the Admissions team tomorrow to discuss admissions authorities for Rochester Maths & Chatham Grammar. I'm also going to have a chat with DS's headteacher to get her comments on the review panel's decision and have a look at the work she submitted.
If I glean anything useful I'll put it on this forum. I feel time is of the essence, as forms have to be in on Wednesday. AAARRRGGHHH!!!

Read with interest your comments which appear to mirror our own experience

Ds missed by 2 - school very supportive - review again picked up on points which don't match 11+ scores or SATS scores.??

Comments received on the report back make me query whether they were subject specialists ? comment like 'lacks a feeling for number' ' Lacks maturity' I don't think you would find on any mark schemes for primary or secondary and are subjective !

More importantly Like many we didn't understand the overriding importance of the sample and trusted the school's judgement and ability to provide a sample that matched the criterion and reflected his ability.

Also we are now aware how schools prepare the samples varies wildly. putting many children at a clear disadvantage against the others . We are contacting the admissions team to query how they can possibly assure that all children had an equal opportunity in the review when some schools such as ours did not keep pupil work for this purpose such as maths investigations . Whereas others we are aware of were willing to take children out prior to the test to complete ' best folders' and complete maths investigations in case they were needed, or more seriously take children out of lessons following the results and allow them to re-draft and take home the sample prior to the sample being submitted albeit innocently by the parents. It is the process which is flawed and monitoring procedures that are fatally flawed .

We are not ranting parents and these things did happen of which we are not the only witnesses ,so I ask the question does this not invalidate the whole review process -

Sorry - I'm in the same position as a few of the parents here - and I still don't understand this statement - is it up to me to provide evidence that the Review wasn't "fair, consistent and objective" - how would I go about doing that ?

Dear PumpLaneDad,

What you have to do at appeal will depend on whether they uphold the review was fair or not.

If they uphold it was fair. Then you will need to prove it was unfair in order to proceed to the next stage. Tassie has listed some reasons that could be raised regarding inconsistency.

However, If they don't uphold it was fair then you would proceed as if you were going to a normal appeal.

So you need to first establish which senario you are facing. I understand that last year not all of the schools upheld that the review was fair.

P.S This is quite far out of my comfort zone as I am located in Yorkshire

non-qualification review

Post by CGGS mum of two »

Hi
I am new to posting but have followed this forum for over a
year.
Last year my DD missed the Medway test by 7 points. We went to review as she had always done well in class but performed badly in exams. We had the full suppport of the Head. She did not get the review and some of the remarks were very damning and upsetting.Like others who have posted they did not correspond to her SATS scores or general ability.
We appealed and won!
The review process is extremely flawed. You have to remember they are looking for a set number of children to pass and therefore some who are of Grammar ability will not be found so by the panel. The comments are made to support their decision.
Chatham Grammar school found the process to be unfair and so we could present our evidence that she was of Grammar ability.
She is doing well since starting in September and does not appear to be struggling.
I know what you are going through but my advice is don't give up.Appeal in March and try to keep snae and positive until then.
