Re: Eek!
There is an awful of that said about the NYorks exam - many seem to think that it is so hard that nobody passes. Actually it is 28% so SOMEBODY must get through.FluffyD wrote:
There has even been a mum at my school who have said that my DS won't get in without a tutor as the test is really hard. Duh! Tell me something I don't know! She was just peeved as her DS was 10 marks away.
I
DD had a friend whose mother (the first time we met) started to tell me how hard the exam was... I had DS sitting next to me who was at EGS already - so reckoned I did know a bit about it. Anyway she only registered her DD 2 weeks before the test and she missed the cut by one mark.. kid (and mum) were happy with catchment school anyway but to her mid it just proved what a hard exam it was.

As I commented on earlier I mentioned it to a mum that my DS was taking the exam and she asked "did I have him tutored up then" and I said no...then she paused and said "Did you used to be a teacher then?"...no!...she just said "oh" dont think she knew what to say at that point (I think she pitted me lol) Personally I think my DS is doing a lot more than he would with a tutor and I would hate to hand over control of his progress to someone who just gets paid on every session and isnt "involved" if you know what I mean...My DS & I have kept it fairly quiet that hes applying which is better for him as so far the kids who do know said hes too thick to get in.....(which has spurred him on more )

Janet71...turn it on its head...i think you could start charging for Tuition...you sound marvelous!
And yes you are right. Any exam is hard if you haven't revised or prepped in some way...but then you have the school of thought that says this exam is prep proof and tests natural ability....mmm wonder how many actually go into the test without prep of any sort...Good luck!

Re: Eek!
both myself and my sister have children who both got into grammar schools without any form of tutoring so just keep on with what you are doing, we both strongly believed that we wanted out children to be able to get in on their own merits rather than just be pushed through the exam and then struggle with the workload, good luck and dont listen to anyone who tries to belittle you for not going down the tutoring route, good luck!
Re: Eek!
Thanks penny - We always want the best dont we? My DS is above average at school at present so I dont think he will struggle at school if he gets in - I just hope he gets through on the day but Ive been speaking to one of the mums who has her DD in the local comp BGS and as he DD is above avg she said they really push them in the top sets and they have told her DD that they are anticipating her taking her Maths a year earlier and getting an A* so its a little easier think that if he doesnt get in then it wont be a total loss...pennyb wrote:both myself and my sister have children who both got into grammar schools without any form of tutoring so just keep on with what you are doing, we both strongly believed that we wanted out children to be able to get in on their own merits rather than just be pushed through the exam and then struggle with the workload, good luck and dont listen to anyone who tries to belittle you for not going down the tutoring route, good luck!
Re: Eek!
we just told both our children to try their best and that we would be proud of them whatever the outcome as the amount of pressure these kids have is immense, they do have to be reminded that even though it is preferable it is not the end of the world if they dont get in on allocation, if worst comes to the worst you can always put your child down on the waiting list as there are always a couple of children who cant cope once they are at the grammar school but fingers crossed it wont come to that, i know how nerve racking it is, thank god ive got another 5 years before i have to do it all over again
