Recommended summer practice material post tutoring

Post by dingdong9 »

Hi there,

My son has been having tutoring for nearly a year for the 11+ using Bonds 'Up to speed maths', Bonds 'verbal reasoning 10 minute tests' plus lots of creative writing help. HHe will now finish with the tutor for the summer and I want to focus on more exam-type practice and papers I can use to set up mocks with. I certainly would never pass an 11+ myself, so tutoring him as such is out, but I can certainly work from a book and set up mock conditions!

My son has high functioning ASD, which I should mention, too.

I have been scouting about today and found the links on here:

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/school ... -yorkshire" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It all looks rather daunting and I don't want to both spend a fortune and overwhelm my son!! What would be your recommendation, at this stage, for one or 2 materials from each list to pick and work with for him?

thanks :D

I'm just working through the lists of materials from those links, and there are a few things I realise I don't know!

First thing is whether the NVR and Maths papers will be multiple choice in the exam, or write the answers on the paper?

How many minutes is the exam, and how many questions will be in each section? Following on from this, what timings should the child be working towards for each section?

Am I right in saying that they do the creative writing as part of the exam, but it might not be considered, depending on the results of the other two sections?

Thanks again :D

Hi Dingdong and welcome,

Which school are you looking at? There are different tests in each area - have a look here http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/school ... re-11-plus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

hi mitasol,

thanks!

I got those links of recommended books from the website for my area already - it's Calderdale so Crossleys and NHGS.

It will depend on how much you want to do but here are some suggestions:-

There are plenty of suitable free maths papers - try old sats papers http://www.satstestsonline.co.uk/sto_past_papers.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or google Independent school admission papers (some here) http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/advice ... lus-papers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and some free papers here too http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/free-1 ... ice-papers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Any of the commercial maths papers will be fine too. The maths test is written by the schools and nothing will be an exact match.

For verbal reasoning - (there are 4 papers in each pack)
Susan Daughtrey /Bright Sparks papers are good

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/shop/9 ... ack-2.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (if you have time)
and finish off with GL http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/shop/9 ... ack-1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
First thing is whether the NVR and Maths papers will be multiple choice in the exam, or write the answers on the paper?
Both the maths and verbal reasoning are multiple choice. There is no NVR
How many minutes is the exam, and how many questions will be in each section? Following on from this, what timings should the child be working towards for each section?
There are no sections within the exams. Off the top of my head, 80 questions in 50 mins for the VR and 40 questions in 30 mins for the maths.
Am I right in saying that they do the creative writing as part of the exam, but it might not be considered, depending on the results of the other two sections?
Calderdale is maths, verbal reasoning and a small writing piece which is only used to select the final 25%.

I hope that helps but let me know if you have any questions.

Hi,

I'm just working my way through your info, very thorough, thank you!

I am confused about VR and NVR - you've told me that there is no NVR with Calderdale - is that just this area? I keep finding papers and resources for both VR and NVR. Thanks again.

The schools in the region all do different tests. There is a list here. http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/school ... re-11-plus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ermysted & Ripon in North Yorkshire use a traditional NVR test. Heckmondwike is using a new test this year and it sounds like they have chosen CEM which also includes some form of NVR.
