Just to reassure you, they do make new friends. A year ago DS1 was the only one from his school to go to a GS, so he knew no one when he started. The majority of his friends went to the local comp, but unlike you, we (and he), didn't like it. If you think about your own life, how many of your Primary School friends do you still have? The majority of friends in adult life come from your later years, so don't be worried about going to different schools. If they are that good a friend they will find a way of remaining in touch anyway.
