Moving to Manchester

Post by Exams2018 »

My husband has just been offered a job in Manchester and we are considering moving there. DD is in year9 at a local grammar school and loves it here. Is it even possible for her to get a in-year place at one of Trafford's grammar schools? Any relevant advice is gratefully received.

Thank you! :)

there is a bit in the secondary schools booklet https://www.trafford.gov.uk/residents/s ... pectus.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

trouble with any schools is that it tends to be if someone is leaving and a place becomes available - some GS set a test and offer it to the pupil who gets the best score (not easy if you moving and wanting to apply) - might be best to have a word with the LEA.

Other option is to aim to live near a good non-selective school though whether the application process is any easier I am not sure

It's possible to get a place if you live close to the school and pass the test. There are waiting lists, but people do move so places do come available.

https://www.urmstongrammar.org.uk/page/ ... D11&pid=28" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I would suggest taking a place at an independent school while waiting for a grammar school place.

https://www.wgs.org/admissions/entrance-examinations/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

https://www.stockportgrammar.co.uk/seni ... ons/apply/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://bridgewater-school.co.uk/admiss ... to-senior/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There are school busses to get to the Independent schools, but it isn't easy to get to every school from every area.

There's a Catholic grammar (Loreto) in Trafford near AGGS. Manchester has Islamic & Jewish Independents. I'm not sure how many and where they are, there's at least three.

I think it's theoretically possible, but I think places rarely become available so do your research very carefully. I would also say that at Yr 9, its not just a question of passing the entrance exam - certainly at AGGS (and I;m guessing its quite similar for the other grammars too) there are a number of exams which your DD would need to pass.

From the "What Do They Know" website, this is the info about in-year admissions (bear in mind the year group is between 180-210 girls).

The total in-year admissions are as
follows:
2016 - Year 8 - 6, Year 9 - 3
2017 - Year 8 - 5, Year 9 - 1
2018 - Year 8 - 2, Year 9 - 3
2019 - Year 8 - 4, Year 10 - 1
2020 - no in-year admissions
