Hi, I just wondered how everybody else did with the St Anselms results today? I'm glad to say DS passed, and by a decent amount too. (Heres hoping he is as successful with the Wirral 11 plus.)
Just out of interest does anyone know if StA is normally oversubscribed? The reason I ask is we are not Catholics and I wondered what kind of chance we would have of getting in.
Good luck to you all :D

Hello Miggi
Many many Congratulations-takes the worry away doesn't it? Its a lovely family type school
My boy passed too and got 100% in the VR which I really can't believe (won't tell you about the English-he only did half a paper-still got an okish mark though). When i went to the open evening the Head Teacher said that if you pass the exam and put St A as a first choice then you are guaranteed a place-they've even cast ther net further afield this year inviting applications from South Wirral as well. Falling rolls still in play for a few years yet especially with boys, the grammars take away a lot of their possible applicants and there is a limmited amount of Catholic boys. The entrance criteria is on the website-regrading the faith the order of prefernce is Catholic, Baptised chritian faith and then non baptised boys. (You have to produce a certificate to prove it).
Basically if you've passed you are in!
Well done to your DS

congratualtions to your ds on passing st anslems exam. we found out last saturday my dd passed upton halls :D
i have just looked at the secondary admissions policy for 2013/14 on the wirral council website for you and it says all boys who passed the exam was offered a place, so not being catholic should make no difference :D

Thank you both- its very reassuring!! Wirral Grammar is nearest to us, so if DS passes, that will be our 1st choice. It is very comforting though to know that if that doesn't work out, St Anselms is a great alternative. :D
I wonder if the VR paper was easier this year (with them sitting the exams a bit earlier) as DS also got 100%? DS hates English so his mark was a pleasant surprise, and his maths result was very good considering some of the question types are years above what they are taught in primary school! :o
Roll on the 19th now and a large bottle of wine....

Not sure if DS goes to school with a lot of very bright boys, but out of about 14 boys who sat the exam, all but one achieved 140/ 140 in the VR test!!! Does anyone know how this exam usually relates in difficulty to the 11 plus VR papers? :?

Can only go off last year, but Children I know who pasted the entry test failed the 11+ test, So the answer I guess would be harder.

Hi to all
Yes the level of difficulty for VR is harder in the mainstream grammars, although they both use the 21 question types. Its still possible they haven't passed the mainstream test. However, the maths paper can be tricky for St Anslems as its of the level they should be at end of year 6 so its content is probably year ahead of even of the high ability children. However if you use the past papers they publish on the site to learn the methods then you shouldn't have a problem. The St Anslems test is more of a test of all round ability and the able children generally get through without a problem.

Just want to say that our son also passed the St Anselms test. St Anselms is a great school, and i have no hesistation sending my boy there over Wirral Grammar. I just don't understand why Wirral Grammar always seem to be seen as the number one choice.

I agree, but infortunatly we live in Wirrals catchment area, and the kids are all brainwashed into thinking that Wirral is the only option.
