Type c question(Mirror code question)
This is driving me mad!! I am sure it is related to the so called mirror sequence but i cannot seem to work it out
if HARD is IBSE
What does UFTU
I thought it was as simple as moving forwards once..but to my surprise the ansewer is TEST....How
I would also appreciate more examples/explanations on this type of questions.

I teach my children to do a first check to see if it is a mirror code. They look at the first letter of the code and word, in this case H and I are they mirrors no, because they are on the same side of the alphabet. Therefore proceed as normal [ if they were mirrors eg B and Y they MUST check another pair of letters before making the decision that is a mirror] This takes all of2/3 seconds.
As this not a mirror, the child will now uses a rule dependent on whether they are looking for a code or a word. In this case they are looking for a word, the rule therefore is moving from the code to word:
I to H = -1 therefore U – 1 = T
B to A = -1 therefore F – 1= E
and so on….
Mirrors are not the norm, but they do occur, I tell my children whenever they see long codes they MUST immediately put a mirror line in between the M and N, this then reminds them that one of them may be mirror.

What is the code for HOUSE
Is it a mirror. Look at the first letter of the word and code are they mirrors = yes E is 5 in from the beginning of the alphabet and V is 5 in form the end. Must make a second check. Find a pair of letters that are obvious if possible. In this case A is obviously the mirror of Z.
Checks done. Proceed as mirror code.

What is the mirror of U= F
what is the mirror of S= H

I too use the alphabet arc during my intial lessons. I use alphabet fridge magnets, giving the child randomly individual letters in quick succession. At first they get the letters all mixed up but eventually become quite adept.
I also play games with the alphabet:
I tell them that E and V are the 5th letters from each end.
M is the 13 th [M for middle]
T is the 20th letter [T for Twenty]
I then ask them quickfire questions eg what is the sum of F and T, give the answer as a position and a letter.
What is the product of M and C
etc etc

Hi
Have you tried making an alphabet circle?
In excel, enter the alphabet in column 1.
Go to the tables and charts icon and click on doughnut.
An alphabet circle will be created.
This is a good tool for counting forward past Z, and counting backwards past A.
