School has sent home an Athey VR test dd has done , it is quite different to the NFER stuff we've been practising.

The thing is one section hasn't been marked at all - I'm not sure if the teacher missed it or iff dd's answers are wrong ?

I can't work the answers out at all!
it is number sequences - what comes next & why ?
can anyone help

Q30) 4,8,6,12,10,20,?
Q3) 1 24,53,46,75,68,? Is it 97?
Q32) I can do
Q33) 16,20,15,21,14,? Is it 22?
Q34) I can do
Q35) 1,3,4,5,7,8,9,?
Q36) 33,16,30,19,27, ? Is it 22?

Yes + 29 – 7 + 29 – 7 + 29 = 97


Q33) 16,20,15,21,14,? Is it 22?
+ 4 – 5 + 6 – 7 next one + 8 = 22

Q35) 1,3,4,5,7,8,9,?
+ 2 +1 +1 +2+1 + 1 groups of 3 back to +2 = 11

Q36) 33,16,30,19,27, ? Is it 22?
- 17 + 14 – 11 + 8 next one - 5 = 22 [taking away 3 each time, alternating between adding and subtraction]

Out of interest which school are you applying for? Athey is not NFER related.

We are in Medway, Kent.
I know that Athey isn't NFER related, but school has an after school study club for the 11+ & this is the material they have chosen to use. The Medway Test is on Saturday & they did this practice paper on Monday. It was then sent home by the teacher only partially marked & dd understandably wanted to know if she was correct or not.

I'm slightly irritated that they gave them this completely different & difficult paper when they knew there would be no opprtunity to explain to the children any misunderstandings. I realise it is free & the teacher is giving up her own time etc etc. But it really knocked my dd's confidence which is the last thing I wanted so close to the test. She has been doing really well (90% plus) in the Bright Sparks & NFEr tests and prior to this really liked VR

Are you paying for this club? Is it run by the school or an outside concern? Either way quite disgraceful using materials that are not related to NFER stable of publishers.

Hi Patricia,

No I'm not paying for it. It was run for free by a teacher after school for 6 sessions b4 the summer & 6 sessions this academic year . I'd like to say something about choice of materials, but I fear if I do it may just be withdrawn as the school doesn't have to do it & this particular teacher has never done it before & is quite "scary!!".I just don't think I'd win any friends going in and offering advice on more suitable materials

It has been useful for my dd in many ways, just this test was inappropriate especially so close to the real test and pointless as the teacher knew she wouldn't be able to go through the answers later.

at least Mike's answer stops the unhealthy obsession with 22!
Must admit some of these seem rather hard and the "pattern" a little stretched (thinking of +2 + 1 + 1 + 2 etc)

Sometimes these rather convoluted patterns are easier if you look at alternate numbers. They then look like two very simple series, e.g. Q33 is a sequence of +1 +1 +1 and a sequence of -1 -1 -1, Q36 is a sequence of -3 -3 -3 and a sequence of +3 +3 +3. Same with those horrible sequences of letter pairs (e.g. ZA XB VC type of thing) - it's often easier to treat the first letters and the second letters as two separate series.

Maybe you can just let the school know how it affected your DD. If you can do it tactfully without being critical the school might be appreciatvie. Personally I feel the more types of papers they have access to the better, but less than a week before the 11+ is not the time to introduce them.
