answer to number sequence?

I am stuck on this sequence any help appreciated.
1 2 3 4 9 12 ( )
By the way the answer given is 36.

Longer sequence of numbers - therefore look at every other one to find the pattern - in this case :
1x3 = 3
3x3 = 9
3x9 = 36
I think??!!

I dont understand it. My only thought is that 1 2 3 4 9 12 are all factors of 36
but next in the sequence would be 18! Oh and 6 is missing! so I guess not.

mmmm ... good one! agree it might be a typo,
3*4=12 + 4*9=36 - so maybe something along that line
or: the cubes are there: 1,4,9,...,36 missing out 25......
mind addled - colleagues watching "matrix revolutions"... ugh!
