hi patricia last month i got lot of advice from you regarding diy for 11+ and i am very happy to let you know that my son is really enjoying all this and he is already scoring between 75-88% (based on 8-10 papers)i hope by sep/ oct he should be alright. he manages to finish his test just within time(strictly 50 minutes). i know you might think i am pushing him to hard by giving him test papers already but believe me its him who ask me to give him tests. yeap he is reading about 2-3 times at home and note down new words+ your list of words +cd ect. and good part is he is not feeling any pressure. i hope he will feel same towards the end as well. ok this time we are stuck on one question it might be very easy but we can't solve it.
code for FOILED is ULROVW
code for CHAFF is ?
answer is XSZUU
its from Tutor Test 2

I think the code is the alphabet backwards

ie A=Z
B=Y
C=X
D=W
E=V

etc

I always find it easiest to write out the alphabet with the codes in the correct place which allows you to look for a pattern

eg

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
ZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA

This may or may not help your child

Dear Nishant

Follows a copy and paste from one of my posts in the Tips section.

Some children are quick enough to recognise immediately others have to work the code out in the normal fashion...get it wrong and say to themselves ...oh yes its the other type!!

Child should glance at the first line and 'see' if they can notice certain letters are their opposite number at the opposite end of the alphabet

eg the letter E is the 5th letter in from the left, the 5th letter coming in from the opposite end of the alphabet is V....the letter W comes in 4 from the end of the alphabet, so the 4th letter coming in from the opposite end of the alphabet is D

So, what is the code for BAGS

B comes in 2....2 in from opposite end is Y

A comes in 1....1 in from opposite end isZ

G comes in 7....7 in from opposite end is T

S comes in 8 [ from right end]...8 in from opposite end is H

Code for BAGS is YZTH

I call these codes 'coming in from the ends'

Just to confuse matters this type may also take on a twist where..

If the code for EGG is UTT
What is the code for CAT

This time its come in from the opposite end plus 1...

E comes in 5.....U has come in from the opposite end 5 [+1]

So, the code for CAT.....

C comes in 3......3[+1] =4.....4 from opposite end =W

A comes in 1.....1[+1]=2.....2 from opposite end =Y

T comes in 7.....7[+1]=8.....8 from opposite end =G

Code = WYG

Good luck

sorry the font changes don't seem to have worked very well but if you write it out on a piece of paper it should make sense

BUCKSMUM wrote:I have downloaded the epapers from Tutors website and working through them with my son. Unfortunately I am stuck on Practice paper 1B example for questions 29-35. We have managed to work out the answers to the questions but cannot work out how to arrive at the answer in the example:

DR ER FP GP ( )

Answer is HQ

We can arrive at H but do not understand how to get Q. Please help.
Answer

To arrive at the first letter of each pair, it's just the next letter of the alphabet i.e

D E F G and then H.

To arrive at the second letter of each pair, it's the next letter but this is repeated for the next pair.

i.e For D, it is R and for E, it is R.
For F, the next alphabet to R is P, so it is P for F and P for G.

For H, it will be Q.

I hope this is clear.

Dear Blessed

Think you may be getting the order of the alphabet mixed up.....

Its P Q R

Not R P Q

You're right. I've had another look at it.

It should by what the others have said in the previous posts. It should be have been an N instead of a Q.

My mistake.

sorry.
