Hello
These questions involve taking a letter from 1st word and adding to the other to make 2 new words

Does anyone have any helpful ways of approaching these please?

My daughter doesn't have big problems with the vocab questions (thus far) but seems to find it hard to "visualise" the words with letters taken away or added.

Should we be writing the options to start with...maybe it is just practice!!

If your daughter is preparing for the Bucks tests, they are multiple choice.

Firstly, work out which of the letters can be taken out of the root word and will leave a word behind. There will only be a few letters to choose.

For example

GRANT

Take G to leave RANT

Cannot take R or A or N

Take T to leave GRAN

Either G or T will fit into the second word not both.

If second word is, for example, RAIN

Only G will fit to give GRAIN

The most common error for this type of question is that the student identifies a letter that can be taken out of the first word, but does not test whether it will fit into the second word.

Another thing to bear in mind is that "into" also means "on to" so the letter could be placed at the beginning or end of the second word.

Just would add that if the child cannot visually see the word with the letter taken out, use a pencil to cover each individual letter.

GRANT

By covering the letter G with the tip of the pencil, the child can see in front of them the word RANT.

Should they cover R they would see G ANT etc etc

Agree the biggest pitfall is the child that does NOT ensure the letter will fit into the second word. Many words on the left will have more than 1 letter than can be removed.

Hi

A good source for words to practice move a letter are crossword solver books and scrabble books.

If the test is multiple choice go through the five-letter word lists.

The 6,7 and 8 letter word lists are also helpful for the compound noun questions.

To clarify.

Susan Daughtrey Books 1-7 are only applicable to areas using Verbal Reasoning Standard form.

Should your area use NFER Multiple Choice, then the above S. Daughtrey is of little use, it uses 35 plus questions many of which are irrelevant to NFER M/C.

To learn the techniques for VR, M/C, NFER, the following book would be of use.
