Do they really ask such hard questions?

I'm working through some VR papers with DS although some of the questions seem more akin to maths or NVR. I've been teaching him strategies to work out the answers to all the questions and he is improving, although it is slow progress.
The issue I'm having is with questions like this:
4=15
6=35
8=63
Now obviously this is an easy one but I've found one where the formula was:
1.5n x 5
And another:
1/2(n-2)
After some time I'm sure it would dawn on me what the answer is but it would never cross my son's mind to multiply N by a number that wasn't an integer. So do they really get this complicated? The book is for 11+ and if he were to get such a question then he'd spend a huge amount of time trying to work it out!
Also, is this really VR?

The first one is one and a half N, not 1. 5nx5

1.5n x 5 is the same as 7.5n - so I guess if you looked at it and were thinking, oh that must be some multiple of n because it's big, you might try 7n and 8n and spot that it was halfway. Challenging though.
1/2(n-2) is half n take away 1, which doesn't seem that awkward really.
I have no idea though what sort of difficulty actually appears in the papers - neither of my two who have sat them have managed that level of feedback!

so why did they write the example with the brackets to confuse dumb wits like me!

I taught my dc algebra when child was 10, simple algebra mind. Not sure as to the level that may come up in 11+ exams mind.
7x+15=50. For example...
Find x
On the other hand, who in their right mind would want to find their 'x'....

He knows simple algebra but it seems to make little difference when he comes to these sums.
And why is this in a VR paper?!

It is to do with pythogorus theorem i think, which is taught quite later in school.
