4 (12) 36
2 (6) 18
5 (?) 45

Number in the middle is smaller than at least one of the outside numbers, therefore probably dividing or subtracting. It does not work, do not panic, go straight to adding and multiplication.

4 x 36 = 144
square root of 144 = 12

2 x 18 = 36
square root of 36 = 6

5 x 45 = 225
square root of 225 = 15

I teach my children ...

1] Times tables up to 12, in addition the 13s and 15s. [weekly grids]

2] Square numbers up to 15 - 13 x 13 = 169, just reverse the last 2 digits to make 196 i.e. 14 x 14 [children love oddities like this]

3] How to quickly multiply and divide the old fashioned way.

Its all about quickly manipulating numbers and most importantly MAKING NOTES not trying to do everything in their head. I take great pleasure when a child gets something wrong and no notes have been taken by saying “ You are working quickly under pressure your head is swimming with letters, numbers, codes and words, you WILL make mistakes if you DO NOT write it down”
