Hi,
There is a way of making the original question work (although a little complex!).
(40 [90] 37) - [3+7 = 10 -1 = 9] [2nd digit of 40 is 0]
(38 [88] 45) – [4+5 = 9 -1 = 8] [2nd digit of 38 is 8]
(35 [xx] 55) - [5+5 = 10 -1 = 9] [2nd digit of 35 is 5]
