AB is to YZ as CD is to ??

Answer is WX. My daughter wrote AB. In other questions she has wrapped the alphabet ie STUVWXYZABC etc.

On this basis, I agree with her answer. Can't explain how you would know to move into the alphabet to WX other than saying "because it is!!". Never a good explanation.

What I can't explain is how one would know to count in rather than wrap around - other questions require you to wrap around.

How do you know which approach to take? (Unless you have the answer and then it's easy!)

This is the mirror codes, but sometimes they do not go from first letter to first letter, but rather, first to second letter. These atre the tricky ones.

Looks like a mirror question. Draw a line between the M and the N. This is your mirror. Then circle the pairs of letters given. The relationship should then be clear. I don't like this sort of question because usually the first letter of the pair has its relationship with the first letter of another pair, whereas here the pair of letters has to be viewed as a single entity eg. in a mirror question, A usually corresponds with Z but not so in this example.

I know I am being a bit 'thick' but how do you know it is a mirror code and not just a 'continue the alphabet' code?!!

Was AB an option on the answer sheet?

I'm afraid that it only becomes very noticeable if you learn the pairs that go together.

First-timer: there was not an answer sheet - it is a standard format test.

If it was a mirror, should it not be: AB is to ZY ie AZ and BY. This is A to Y and B to Z isn't it?

Your DD's answer is logical. Like I said, I don't like mirror questions where you have to consider the pair as a whole. I think there is a tendency within papers for the difficulty level to increase within each section, so perhaps a clue would be that it is the last question in that particular section. Not exactly scientific, I know!
