Question about one of Patricia's tips on this forum

Post by fatbananas »

Hi,

I've just read Patricia's very thorough scheme for studying and practising verbal reasoning. Towards the bottom, she emphasises the importance of good and fast mental maths (instant recall of timestables etc). She also mentions knowing addition and subtraction facts for the numbers up to 150. May I ask, should that also be instant recall, so that you just know the answers or is it knowing all the number bonds and being able to 'bridge through the ten' quickly to work out, say, 64+73?

We live in a superselective area where you need to get 90++ percent to get in, so I can imagine that speed (so instant recall) is of the essence, but just thought I'd check!

As long as it's really quick it doesn't matter how you get there!

bridging through ten and number bonds is fast and efficient,

You can play games to speed up. Using playing cards ( or 0-9 dice) generate 2 or3 digit numbers ,first to 150 gets a point. if you feel you have the advantage you can always start off by giving a point to you if they get it wrong , point to them if they are correct.

only go to 100, but still good
