Question types: Letters converted to numbers
This information was originally posted by Patricia to help people convert IPS "letter question types" to Tutors CD "numbered question types":
The Tutors Numbers mapped onto IPS letters as follows...
Edit 28/03/08: At the request of Mike Edwards from the Tutors I have now added their descriptions of the question types as shown on their CDs. These are not standard descriptions across the "industry", but may be helpful to parents and tutors.
1 = A = Insert a letter
2 = B = Related words
3 = C = Word letter codes
4 = D = Closest meaning
5 = E = Hidden word
6 = F = Missing word
7 = G = Letters for numbers
8 = J = Move a letter
9 = L = Letter series
10 = M = Word connections
11 = P = Number series
12 = Q = Compound words
13 = R = Make a word
14 = U = Letter connections
15 = Z = Reading information
16 = H = Opposite meaning
17 = I = Complete the sum
18 = K = Related numbers
19 = N = Word-number codes
20 = O = Complete the word
21 = S = Same meaning
Note especially the last 6 types, the infamous "HIKNOS" questions that come up on the Forum so often.

To save people cross-referencing, these are the IPS Letter Types grouped in the same way:Mike wrote:When tutoring a child at home it may help to link question types together rather than to go through each of the 21 question types in order. This is because some question types can be worked out by using similar methods & techniques.
A suggested list is,
Codes
Types 3, 9 and 14
Type 19
Making Words
Types 1 and 8
Types 5, 6 and 12
Types 13 and 20
Word Meaning
Types 2 and 10
Types 4, 16 and 21
Maths
Types 7 and 17
Types 11 and 18
Reading Information
Type 15
The Type numbers are from The Tutors catalogue, that can be referenced against IPS by using Sally-Anne's post.
Regards
Mike

Re: Question types: Letters converted to numbers
We are often asked if the questions in Susan Daughtrey's Books 1 - 4 (not her Bright Sparks papers) are comparable to the GL 21 types.
Broadly speaking they are not, but some of them are direct matches and others are partial matches. Forum member Orson has kindly tried to collate them against the IPS question types. The results should be approached with a little caution, but it is otherwise another very useful resource for cross-referencing different materials against each other. Thank you, Orson!
