Q1 This is a "long" list of letter pairs, so look to see if you only need alternate pairs. In this case, if you just take the pairs
WA AH FO LV
then you get a pattern on the first letter of each pair which goes,
+4 +5 +6 +7 giving you S for the +7
and you get a pattern on the second letter of each pair which goes,
+7 +7 +7 +7 giving you C for the +7
So I make this one: SC (if I've counted right!)

I make the pattern
+8 +9 +10 +11 +12 for the first letter of each pair, giving K for the first letter
and
+2 +3 +4 +5 +6 for the second letter of each pair, giving A for the second letter
So I make this one: KA

Q3
UNLESS = ULHYKI
what does WMKXWD mean?
Work out how you get from each letter of the code to each letter of the word, and apply the same rule letter by letter to WMKXWD. In this case, the pattern is +0 +2 +4 +6 +8 +10 giving WOODEN as the word.

Q4
WHICH = TFHCI
what is the code for QUEUE
Work out how you get from each letter of the word to each letter of the code (so the other way round from number 3), and apply the same rule letter by letter to the word QUEUE. In this case the pattern is -3 -2 -1 0 +1 giving NSDUF as the code.

If you do questions like these last 2 letter by letter, you don't actually need to be aware of any pattern in how the words/codes are produced.

Oops... you're right.

A message to Y - I am impressed with your workings out. I never quite understood these, perhaps I should have had a tutor myself!! Maybe we would have got a discount if my daughter and I went together.

Anyhow thanks for the workings out - I will now go and have another look at my daughters codes to see if I can help her.

Just a thought

When I was working through these with my daughter (that is the 'C' type questions of the 'if XYZA means FOOD what does EFGH mean' variety), she was desperately slow at them. She found the backward and forward tracking very difficult. We tried a method where she wrote numbers above the letters, indicating how many letters to go backwards or forwards. She loved the clarity of the method, but she was EVEN SLOWER, and I made her revert to simply working the codes out one letter at a time. I don't recommend anyone changes their method for 11+ this week (!), but anyone with plenty of time (and a child who is slow at this type) might like to do a sanity check on what works best for their child.
