Yes, you just have to repeat the pattern to build the required word.

So, RELIEF = FILE

F is the last letter of RELIEF
I is the fourth letter of RELIEF
L is the third letter of RELIEF
E is the fifth letter of RELIEF

Take the last, fourth, third and fifth letters of ERRAND to get DARN.
Take the last, fourth, third and fifth letters of REPAST to get TAPS.

etc.

As regards a technique, I guess you could write the number positions of the letters above the source word, but my step-son just seems to build up the target word by transposing a letter at a time.

IPS BOOK 2 TEST 10 QUESTION 6

(relief, file) (errand, darn) (repast, ______) correct answer is TAPS

You look to see where the letters in the second words (in each pair) are found in the first words in each pair.

So:
(relief, file) (errand, darn) (repast, ______) correct answer is TAPS

The first letter of darn is the last letter of errand
The first letter of ????? is the last letter of repast (T)

The second letter of darn is the fourth letter of errand
The second letter of ????? is the fourth letter of repast (A)

The third letter of darn is the second or third letter of errand
Check with file:
The third letter of file is the third letter of relief
The third letter of ????? is the third letter of repast (P)

The fourth letter of darn is the fifth letter of errand
The fourth letter of ????? is the fifth letter of repast (S)

The first letter of read is the last letter of danger
The first letter of ???? is the last letter of stream (M)

The second letter of read is the fifth letter of danger
The second letter of ???? is the fifth letter of stream (A)

The third letter of read is the second letter of danger
The third letter of ???? is the second letter of stream (T)

The fourth letter of read is the first letter of danger
The fourth letter of ???? is the first letter of stream (S)

Hi

As these questions are multiple-choice some of the answer options can be discounted early in the process leaving only one possible answer. In many cases you do not have to work out the whole word to get the correct answer.

Mike
