Number Sequences - Help!

Amid the preparations for Christmas I am getting my daughter ready for her exam in Kent in January. We are hitting problems with the number sequence questions along the lines:

7 _ 9 16 11 24 _

and

4 12 11 33 32 96 _

I have tried common sequences, using an nth term approach but can't seem to crack them

Can anyone shed some light?

First one looks to me like 2 separate sequences mixed together:

i.e.

7, 9, 11, 13 & 8, 16, 24

so the missing ones are 8 & 13

line 2 looks like pairs with the first number being multiplied by 3

i.e.

4 x 3 = 12
11x3 = 33
32x3=96

Hope this helps!

Hi

The second sequence follows the rules

x3 then subtract 1
x3 then subtract 1
x3 the subtract 1

So the next number in the sequence is 95

Thank you - this helps alot I was guilty of looking for more obvious sequences and just have to say how grateful I am not to be sitting the exam.
