verbal reasoning GL style (south west consortium)

Post by shweta02 »

My DS is 9 years old and will start year 5 from September.

Please recommend a good book for verbal reasoning for practice.

thx

Hi

We used CGP and GL and my daughter was consistently scoring approx. 98% in her VR practice papers prior to her 11+ last month.

As verbal reasoning isn't something that is taught in schools we started with CGP 11+ workbook verbal reasoning age 8-9, then went on to 9-10 then 10-11 before attempting practice papers, so that she could get a good knowledge of the subject first and not get disheartened by not doing well in papers straight away. All bought off Amazon.

Hope this helps and good luck on your 11+ journey :)

Hi Kelstrer, this is very insightful

Is around 97-97percent an approximate score needed “on the day” for both papers to pass??

That is between 1-2 errors is each 80 or 50 questions, indeed a very high mark.
We are SWHerts outer catchment :(
(and currently scoring 75/80 and 47/50 and it’s getting very hard to push those marks any higher :( )

TIA

It will vary from area to area, and as you probably know, the standardisation takes into account age & differing cohorts.

Thanks Scary mum,
It is just so hard to have a “margin of error” of a couple/handful of questions per paper.

You do not need to score 98% in the SW Herts Consortium Maths and VR papers to secure a place at the school of your choice.

Very high scores that can be achieved at home in a comfortable environment are not likely to be replicated in an exam environment and are not required.

Last year the lowest score to secure a catchment place at Parmiters (which is the consortium school that requires the highest scores) was 214 for priority catchment and 241 for an outer catchment space.

The max possible score in the Maths paper is 141 and the same for the VR.

So as you can see the actual scores to get into the most competitive school are nowhere near 98%. DG

Thank you DG, for taking time to post,

there are no physical mocks currently taking place, which doesn’t help.
Also there can be a substantial variation of the marks depending on which Prep material we use :(
