We had a go at it and logically we couldn't find the answer. The answer that we arrived at was wrong according to the NFER answer sheet.

( strike [kick] clock )

( jeans [ ? ] mouse )

Possible answers are:

mean
name
same
nose
sane

If you have the question pack you know the answer but let me just not reveal the answer now and see how we work this out.

I got "name"

k from strike = n from jeans
k from clock = e from mouse

so it needs to start with n and end with e, and their is only one possible answer - "name"

i from strike = a from jeans
so the c must be the first c from clock, to give you name,
as the 2nd c from clock would give you "s" - giving the answer "nase"

Here is the confusion. What logic did you follow to get 'n'? Is that based on penultimate letter because the two words are of different length? Why wouldn't you follow the letter position logic?

Oh my word, I didn't even notice that the two words are not the same length. I just took two off from the end of "strike" to get "k", and then two letters off the end of "jeans" to get "n".

So.... where are the real experts to answer this question?
