In a short test today I could not explain the answers to the following questions. My daughter and I are both stuck.

1, 5, 6, 11, 17, 28 (45) Find the number in brackets. Why is it 45?

RU is to NW as QQ is to (MS) Why is it MS?

KL, EM, ZO, VR, SV, (QA). Why is it QA?

Any help would be appreciated.

Dear Dorset Parent

The maths sequence is a common one used in tests.

1, 5, 6, 11, 17, 28

add the previous 2 to make the third....

1+5 = 6

5+6 = 11

11+17 = 28

17 +28 = 45

The other 2, need to consult an alphabet, will get back to you, if no one else does.

On the first one my son has said the following
1,5,6,11,17,28,(45)

Difference between 1 and 5 = 4
Difference between 5 and 6= 1
Difference between 6 and 11 = 5(diff between prev 2 i.e. 4+1)
Difference between 11 and 17=6 (diff between prev 2 i.e. 5+1)
Difference between 17 and 28=11 (diff between prev 2 i.e. 6+5)
Difference of prev 2 is now 11+6 = 17 so 28+17=45

Hi,

1. Each number is the sum of the receding two numbers, thus 5+1=6,
5+6=11 and so on
2. You need to make sure you look at each of the letters separately and not as a pair.
R to N is backwards 4 places in the alphabet; Q to M is also backwards 4 places. U to W is forward 2 places and Q to S is forwrd 2 places.
3. The sequences of letters K E Z V S Q have gaps between the letters decreasingby one each time thus K to E is minus 6 places, E to Z is minus 5 places, V to Z is minus 4 places etc
The sequence of letters L M O R V A have gaps between the letters increasing by one each time, thus L to M is plus one place, Mto O is plus 2 places and so on.

Dear Dorset Parent

RU is to NW
as QQ is to ? answer = MS

Not sure How much you know about these short codes, so do not think I am being rude takiking you back to basics.

The first rule is NOT to treat them as pairs, they are indvidulal letters.

How do you get from the Ist letter to Ist letter

R to N = -4

apply -4 to the first letter of the second line....Q -4 =M

How do you get from the second letter to the second letter

U to W = + 2

apply to the second letter of the second line...Q +2 =S

Answer = MS

KL EM ZO VR SV ANSWER = QA

Again you must not treat them as pairs.

Look at the ist letter in each pair, find out how you get from 1st to 1st to 1st etc

= -6 - 5 - 4 - 3......so next insequence is -2 ...S - 2 =Q

Now look at second letter of each pair

How do you get from 2nd to 2nd to 2nd etc

= +1+2+3+4....next in sequence is +5 V +5 = A

Answer QA

Hope this helps

Dear All

I am so grateful for this. I am going to print all your replies off and study them. I would not have been able to work this out myself. And I need you to go back to basics, Patricia, so thanks for that.
