Thankfully, the Langley exam went well, whatever that means!!!!!!!!!! Apart from me turning into a dragon in the morning because house was a mess and ds lost his clear pencil case which was all prepared with his favorite pencils and best rubbers! Ds came out of the test smiling and said (oops, i'll tell you later!! :D )

And then the day ended at a restaurant to celebrate, where we met another family who were also out celebrating, and a mum said "I must ask you this... Are you JaysDarlin???"

So, is it that easy to connect your forum persona with the real person?.... I tend to have a visual picture in my mind, when I read the posts, of what form members look like,,,,,I bet I am completely wrong!!!!

Hi thelastsplash,
for Tiffin, which papers would be best to practice and what mark and speed would put a child in with a chance?

First off have a look at these threads...

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... n+practise" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... er#p209034" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Any questions please come back and ask...... I am sure someone with more knowledge than me will be able to help.

Thanks Chad, I'm a bit embarassed for asking now I've seen how many times others have asked the same questions and lovely people have tried to point them in the right direction... Its still all pretty confusing, and seems like a mountain of prep people do. Doing the bare minimum (as I intend to) -

Practice papers in the right format:
NFER-GLA 11Plus Verbal Reasoning Practice Papers Multiple Choice Pack 1 ISBN: 9780708719879 (£8.99)
NFER-GLA 11Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning Practice Papers Multiple Choice Pack 1 ISBN: 9780708719862 (£8.99)

Practice papers to the right standard:
Bright Sparks 11 Plus Verbal Reasoning Multiple Choice Practice Test Paper Pack 1 By Susan Daughtrey ISBN: 9781898696889 (£8.99)
Query for NVR

Appropriate mark / speed, and whether one-off assessment with a specialist tutor available / advisable:
Don't know! Will search the boards again and maybe start my own thread instead of hijacking...

Thanks again,

Hi, back again to update my original post. How's the progress going? Only 3 weeks left till the Tiffin exam.

As you may know from the Hershel thread, ds got 115 in his Slough consortium. We are trying to get him up to 90% - he scores in his 90s for NVR, but for VR he often gets in his 80s.... that's the Walsh papers. Its is the vocabulary that lets him down. He did the Bucks familiarisation paper and got 95%... any tips for improving his vocab in the next three weeks? I get him to read to me, he does his flash cards, AE tuition spelling and vocab book, plus other vocab books...

What else shall I do?

Thanks for you help. :)

Go back over vocab. you have previously worked on and boost his confidence he won't remember it and if he does you are allowed a little white lie :) , focus on exam technique and "doing your best on the day".

So close to a very competitive exam only three things matter, confidence, technique and confidence, and if it's hard carry on it's hard for everyone.

Good luck.

Hi folks.

Just updating the thread for future reference that even though we left it really late, we still managed to get through the 11+ successfully, following the advice given on this site.

However, its best to start early and work at a steady pace!

... And NEVER to loose hope!

Phew, this time it was hard though. Our DS passed his Tiffin test after messing up Langley exam big time. His best mate is also going to stay with him in new school which is good. His response to this great news 'When I can get in, anybody can get in!' I can only say (like Brian's mum in The Life of Brian) 'He is a very naughty boy.' His elder brother can't believe it and is upset that he will have to go to school with this one, specially when his younger brother scored more marks than him in Tiffin exam (DS1 scored 231 in Tiffin after scoring 134 in Langley exam, DS 2 scored only 116 in Langley exam but won the all important 'away game' by scoring 239 in Tiffin exam) "Big Brother, here I come."
