How?
Number admitted are more than PAN. All at 229 were admitted.

It could trigger a successful appeal though perhaps? The school's argument that it could not cope with an extra pupil would be somewhat undermined by having coped with exactly that so far. PAN is a limit but not the absolute limit to pupil numbers in a year group. An appeal panel is allowed to decide that a school can indeed cope with one more and, if presented with overwhelming evidence of a child's exceptional ability (perhaps a child who scored 228 or 227 plus other academic evidence as well as further reasons to admit) they may well decide to uphold one appeal. Parents are allowed to appeal once per academic year I think and, whilst most children will now be happy and settled elsewhere, there may be some that feel it is worth another try.

They are obliged to hold the lists until at least the end of this term. I think most schools hold them longer else they'd be chaos if places did come up as to who qualified for them. Appeals of course don't go by waiting list position. A boy on 225 with overwhelming academic evidence and a documented need to attend the school might win an appeal above a boy on 227 whose case was deemed less strong.

If you applied and were denied a place, you could technically appeal every year!

Yes they would. Once an appeal form is submitted though the school is obliged to answer any questions you ask in relation to aiding your appeal as long as they are reasonable. If they don't, this would count against them at appeal. So you can ask for numbers in Year 7 and other Year groups and numbers for previous years if one of your angles is that they can cope with more boys than they currently have. You can also confirm a boy has left but they won't give any personal details out.
You then need to prove your own case and a good score in the exam (a narrow miss) will obviously be a huge help there.
