recently moved to Surrey, daughter is in Year 5 and would like to appear for Tiffin Girls, Nonsuch Girls and Wallington Girls entrance tests this year. Went through their websites, but few things still not clear.

1) Do Wallington and Nonsuch has a common entrance test? How is the selection and offer processes done, is it on the basis of merit and the order of school preference in the CAF?
Do they have any designated area policy?

2) Tiffin Girls - do they have designated area policy for applying or offering places?

Any advice would be highly appreciated

You sit one exam for Nonsuch and Wallington Girls. Both schools allocate 180 places. If you don't live in the borough of Sutton you have to score in the top 50 to be offered a place. You can only be offered one of the schools if you pass the exam so if you put Nonsuch first then Wallington on your CAF you would only be offered Nonsuch. The exam is Verbal Reasoning and Maths. The exam is in November.

As for Tiffin Girls they offer 120 places regardless of where you live. But for the first time this year they are using distance as a criteria on the waiting list. Places are offered from the list in strict rank and distance order. The exam is Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning and is in early December. My daughter sat the exam this year so if you need any more help just post.

Dear Louise2,

Thanks a lot, that was of real great help. :)

Admission process for Wallington and Nonsuch schools are absolutely clear to me now 8)

Got a bit confused with Tiffin Girls……..
But for the first time this year they are using distance as a criteria on the waiting list. Places are offered from the list in strict rank and distance order.
So does that mean somebody scoring high but staying at a greater distance from school has less chance of getting a place than somebody scoring less but staying close to the school? Or the initial 120 places are offered purely on merit basis, and then in case of a tie or waiting list this distance criteria applies.

Thanks again,

The initial 120 places are allocated on merit. Distance is used for the tied 120th place and the waiting list, girls are ranked according to their score, those girls on the same score are then ranked according to distance, so a girl scoring less living nearer to the school would not be offered a place before a girl who has scored higher but lives further from the school.

Thank you so mauch again, Louise2.

Your answers are so explanatory and exactly what I want to know. :D

I've got few other queries as well regarding the above three schools. I've contacted the schools, they responded very promptly but somehow I'm not very clear even then.

Hope I'm not bothering you...............

1)Does the order of prefernce in CAF lessen the chances of getting a place in a particular school, say if I put Nonsuch , XYZ and Tiffin Girls in above order in CAF and my daughter doesn't get a chance in any of the first two schools but qualifies well in Tiffin Girls. Because Tiffin was in last preference does that lesson her chance in getting a place in Tiffin? As you mentioned previously I believe putting both Nonsuch and Wallington in CAF is of no use as only one school will be offered from the common test of the two schools......Am I right?

2) Which exam is generally more harder, the Nonsuch/Wallington or Tiffin? Or its more dependent on the child if she is better at Maths or Nonverbal, as I believe verbal is common for all.........

Thanks again for all your valuable information. If you want I can register and send you PM. I'm sure I would need some more views on the exam topic once this procedure of allocation is clear.

For Nonsuch and Wallington you are only offered one school but your application is looked at equally for both. It is worth putting both schools down as I know parents who have done that. As for preferences all the schools you are looking at are equal preference which means you can put them anywhere on the CAF and still be offered a place. If you put Tiffin Girls third and pass and don't qualify for your first two choices you will be offered Tiffin Girls. Bear in mind on the CAF for Sutton borough you can put down up to 6 choices, for Surrey council you can only put down 3 choices. If your 3 choices are all grammar schools then it can be risky if you don't have a private back-up.

As for the exam people generally think Tiffin is the harder exam but I'm not so sure, if your daughter is strong in Maths then the Sutton grammars are probably the better option as not everyone gets to grips with non-verbal, then again out of the area you do have to score highly. My daughter didn't sit the Sutton exams but some of her friends did and they said the vocabulary was harder in the Tiffin Girls exam.

When it comes to filling in the CAF in October both Guildhall, Kingston and Sutton Council are helpful.

Hi there,

It's mentioned that for both Wallington & Nonsuch school the admission test is common. Can anyone throw some light into the following queries?
(1) How the rank list would be prepared separately by both schools based on the same test?
(2) Will they (both schools together) allocate 100 places for pupils residing outside the catchment area?

Thanks

Just to ask lakeview's question again:

Both Wallington Girls and Nonsuch say that they offer 50 places on the basis of rank in the entrance test. Does this mean there are effectively 100 places avialable for those living outside the catchment area?

the I way I read it is that they do NOT give 100 places to girls out of the 5km catchment area.
The top 100 scoring girls could be within or outside the area.

at least this is what I understood
