The Allocation and equal preference system

Post by ThreeKids »

I believe this is how it works in simple terms, and the cycle continues until all schools have filled their PAN. It is the reason why it is important that you place your preferences in your true order of preference.

No problem. If it helps just one person understand the system then that will be great.

Interesting diagram and raises some questions as I am not very familiar with the system. In my DS's case

He passed Wilson, Tiffin (score 244), Sutton Grammar (1st phase), Wallington, Bexley selection test (score 280). Our order of preference on CAF is

1. Wilsons
2. Tiffin
3. SGS
4. Wallingon
5. Beths Grammar

I can see you have mentioned "Schools offer places". Now my questions -

1. Will my DS get offers from all schools above if he is ranked highly enough? or, he will get offer from Wilsons only as it is his first choice school on CAF?
2. If gets offers from a number of schools, can we reject offer from our first choice school and accept offer from a lower preference school (if we change our minds in the next 4-5 months, before March 1).

Thanks

Hi London Dad

The places will be allocated but whenever a child is 'holding' more than one place the highest preference place will be held, and the others automatically rejected. So on the first cycle maybe your son would get SGS and Beths. SGS would be held, Beth's rejected. You would not necessarily ever know about that place. At this point also WCGS would be removed as a possibility because you already have a higher preference offer and any offer from them would therefore be automatically rejected on your behalf.

So Beths now goes further down their list and offers your sons place to somebody else. Meanwhile perhaps some Tiffin offers have been automatically rejected and your son was just off getting a place, and now gets one. SGS is now automatically rejected.

Round 3 - SGS offers more places, similarly Wilsons do, but lets say your son did not score high enough, so he still doesn't get a place.

When all the schools have allocated their offers the process ends and formal offers are made on March 1st.

Now we are onto the waiting list phase. You accept Tiffin BUT, mid summer term lets say, you are offered a place off the waiting list at Wilsons. You can now accept that and tell Tiffin that you now have a higher preference school. They can then release that place to somebody on their waiting list - and so on.
